Smoant Battlestar 200W TC Box Mod Review

The last time we looked at a product from Smoant it was a disaster. The Smoant Knight V1. The Knight V1 was incredibly heavy, cumbersome to use, especially manipulating the tank. We were not looking forward to reviewing another Smoant product until the company understood that product weight is of vital concern to users. Today I can happily say that the Smoant Battlestar 200W TC Box Mod has shown that not only can Smoant make a lightweight product, they can make a great product. I’ve had a blast using this powerful, yet compact, dual 18650 box mod. For $44.95 at Element Vape, this is a fantastic value. Bravo Smoant! I knew you could do it.

About Smoant Battlestar 200W TC Box Mod

The Smoant Battlestar 200W TC Box Mod is a high-performance zinc-alloy box mod with a wattage range of 1W to 200W, versatility, i.e.,  full temperature control suite plus variable wattage, resistance ‘read and lock’, manual TCR, firmware upgradable, and a wicked coil resistance range.

The Smoant Battlestar features a unique, compact chassis shape. The backside of the Battlestar is flat, the two sides curve in to create a narrow faceplate configured with a sizable firing button, a good size OLED display, a + and – adjustment bar (sometimes referred to as a rocker switch), and the USB charge/upgrade port at the bottom of the device. The size of the Battlestar is 40mm by 34mm by 83.5mm, or 5.10 inches tall, 2.44 inches across the back, and 2.7 inches deep.

The color I chose to pick up was a bronze blue with a pure black battery cover. The battery cover itself is large, and wraps around the sides of the Battlestar making for an easy grip to release the 4-magnet cover, and a series of vent holes running down on both sides. (the bottom of the Battlestar also has a line of venting holes). Other colors are available, including:

    • White
    • Silver
    • Black
    • Copper
    • Orange
    • Yellow
    • Blue
    • Red
    • Bronze Blue (my color)

    The Usual Suspects

I urge you to read the specs and feature list at the end of this review. There are simply too many to talk about here, but they are worth knowing about. As with most modern mods, the Smoant Battlestar features all the protection and safety features.

Although my own opinion that Temperature Control is on the wane, the Smoant Battlestar has an accurate temperature control suite that features the usual suspects of heating materials; Ni200 Pure Nickel, Ti Titanium, and three types of Stainless Steels, 304, and 316, and 316L.

If that’s not enough, the Smoant Battlestar has a three-memory TCR mode that allows for the accurate use of some unusual materials, including gold, silver and copper. (I’m not kidding) These adjustments of the TCR are made in the device itself, no need for complicated software like eScribe/Evolv. The Battlestar manual includes terrific starting points for TCR adjustments for all the supporting heating elements.

The Smoant Battlestar is powered by dual hi-amp (25A+) 18650 batteries (not included) that are easily inserted after releasing the battery cover.  The four-magnet battery door provides a very secure ‘fix’ to the Battlestar body, yet by gripping the two sides and pulling back equally the door comes off without a hitch. Interestingly, inside the goodie box within the Battlestar product box is an extra 4 magnets.  I’ve been beating on my Battlestar for a month and I’ve seen no movement or malfunction of the default magnets. Perhaps I will down the road. After all, why include extra magnets if Smoant doesn’t think you’ll need them at some point?

The large OLED display features a usual three-column horizontal arrangement, giving the user feedback for Ohms Resistance, the Output Voltage, the Output Wattage, the Output Temperature, and an Icon Battery Life Indicator (1 icon for both batteries). The display is larger than most, save for the Evolv DNA displays and the Joyetech/WISMEC super-large displays. The characters on the display are bright, crisp, and sharp. I would put this display up against the Evolv DNA display anytime. Not that it would win any contest between them, but it’s just a good.

The Battlestar is fired by pressing the oversized firing button. The adjustment bar under the display allows users to adjust the device easily. Getting into the menu system is a breeze.

    Quick Start Menu Operation

The Smoant Battlestar is a 5-click on/off device. Just for fun, once you have your Battlestar up and running, with an atomizer attached, shut it off with the 5-clicks and turn it back on. You’ll see a cute startup screen with the ant mascot and the Smoant name in script revealed character by character. It’s a nice touch.

If the user removes an atomizer to replace a coil, or any reason, the Battlestar will prompt you with a “New Coil?” screen. The adjustment bar moves the checkmark, so choose the right prompt then press the fire button lightly.

Getting further into the menu the user clicks the fire button 3 times. The first thing the user sees is the current setting, VW or NI. Clicking left or right with the adjustment bar gets you to each of the modes available. Choose the one you want, then click the fire button lightly to lock it in.

The manual included in the package is excellently written and easy to follow. I suggest that if you intend to use the Battlestar in any other mode than variable wattage, you keep the manual handy. The Battlestar’s chipset is remarkable, and the manual will make sure the user doesn’t make bad choices.

    Bottom Line

While the Smoant Battlestar is only a dual-18650 platform, the fact that it can achieve 200W is surprising. Kudos to Smoant for engineering a chipset to accomplish that 200W and all the other features.

Battery life is about the same as other dual 18650 box mods, I use Sony VTC6 batteries and the Battlestar seems to like them.

Handling the Battlestar is ultra-comfortable. The smooth finish, not a glossy finish, provides a good grip, and an appealing aesthetic. Fire button is smooth, with a good amount of ‘give’, or tactile feedback.

I stayed with a Blue Smok Baby Beast, and the colors are 99% identical to each other. The Baby Beast looks good on it, but then again, any tank up to 30-32mm is going to fit nicely, with no overhang. The spring-loaded center pin (gold plated) in the stainless steel 510-connector makes sure the user gets a flush fit, and a secure connection to the power underneath.

I like this box mod, and I plan to keep it in my rotation until the eventual point in time comes when the eight devices I use all the time are slowly replaced by newer gear. Right now, those eight devices are as follows, in no ‘particular’ order are:

    Smoant Battlestar Features:

Wismec Predator 228 TC Kit Review

Today we are going to be taking a detailed look at the Wismec Predator 228 Kit which some have said is essentially a copy of the Smok Alien.

Manufactured by Wismec and designed by Sinuous, The Predator can reach up to 228W output power.

So what do we think about the Predator 228 Kit?

Could the Predator be really capable of destroying the Alien’s reputation? Or is the Predator going to be left a mangle chewed up mess left in the Alien’s wake?

Looks aside the Predator and the Alien are two entirely different beasts!

    In The Box

    • Wismce Predator 228 (no cells)
    • Elabo Atomizer
    • Triple 0.2ohm Head
    • NS Triple 0.25ohm Head
    • QC USB Cable
    • User Manual (Predator 228 & Elabo)
    • Warning Card

    Main Specs/Features

    Elabo Atomizer

    • Size: 52.8mm *25mm
    • Capacity: 4.9ml (Triple 0.2ohm Head) 4.6ml (NS Triple 0.25ohm Head)

    Design and Build Quality

When I first got hold of the Predator 228 Kit, I was impressed by look of the mod itself.

The Elabo tank that comes with the kit was another matter, my initial thought what an ugly plain looking tank, thoughts of the Reux Sub Ohm Tank(https://www.urvapin.com/wismec-reux-6ml-atomizer-designed-by-jaybo.html)  started flashing through my mind!

However, personal thoughts aside for the moment, the Wismec Elabo tank is made from food grade stainless steel and Pyrex glass and topped with a SS covered Delrin driptip; the tank was clean and free from any type of machining oil.

The Wismec Predator 228 in my opinion is a work of art!

Made from a spray treated heavy aluminium you are able to fire the Predator from 1w up to 228w with high amp batteries.

The left side hidden fire button makes it a pleasure to fire. As someone who suffers from arthritis the device is very comfortable to hold in either hand or whatever way around you fire it.

The battery door is easy to operate and the addition of the newly designed Stainless Steel 510 makes this a great vape mod.

Basic Guide to Getting Started with the Wismec Predator 228 Kit

    Predator 228 Mod

You will have to put your own batteries in the Predator! We suggest Sony vtc5 or better 18650 batteries.

    • Open the battery door with the slide switch on the bottom of the mod and place your batteries following the correct orientation for polarity
    • Attach a tank or rda to the 510 threads on the top of your mod
    • Click the fire button 5 times fast to turn the device on, likewise to turn the mod off
    • Use the adjustment buttons to set your wattage and vape away

If you want to use a different type of wire other than Kanthal or SS316

    • Click the fire button 3 time fast, this will enter the power menu, shown by the flashing word Power (if in power mode)
    • In this mode you can select your wire option and enter Temp control, hit left button once right button once then using the left button scroll through the wire Ni, Ti, SS.
    • Use your fire button to confirm your choice
    • To alter the TC or Wattage use your adjustment buttons

There are other functions available within the Predator’s menu, please refer to your manual that comes with the kit for details.

How To Fill The Wismec Elabo Tank

It’s advisable to empty the tank before changing coils or you may lose some liquid in the process.

    • Turn the tank upside down and remove the Base
    • Remove your spent coil
    • Properly pre wick your new coil by dripping liquid onto the cotton through the top of the coil and through the liquid intake holes on the sides of the coil
    • Place the new coil into position and screw the base back into position
    • Slide the top cap fill port open and Fill the Elabo tank by placing your bottles needle nose or dripping Pipette into the fill port and fill with liquid
    • Re slide the top cap back into position
    • Leave the Elabo tank for at least 10 minutes so the cotton has chance to soak up more liquid

It is recommended that before you fire the Elabo you perform a dry pull, this is done by closing off the airflow completely and your taking 3 or 4 sharp pulls with your mouth (without firing).

You will now be able to fire the tank on your mod as normal

How Does The Wismec Predator Kit Perform?

The Elabo tank was tested using the NS Triple 0.25ohm coil head rated at 40 to 120w, a e-juice from Totally Wicked called “Mayflower” 80VG/20PG and part of their Expedition range.

Seated on the Predator and vaping it at 80w and 100w the resulting vapour was thick and creamy and very flavoursome.

What surprised me was the amount of time it took to empty the tank although chain vaping does make it rather warm but it soon cools down.

I’m impressed by the amount of vapour and full on flavour I’m able to get from the Elabo, this is no mouth to lung tank.

As well as testing the Predator 228 with the Elabo tank I also used a Kennedy 25mm RDA with SS316 alien coils.

The latter in power mode at 80, 100 and 115w. The vape at 115w was very hot, also tested on TC, 100w 450F. I didn’t experience any miss fires with the Predator in either mode I tested it in.

The Menu System is extremely easy to learn and for those that have had the E-Vic Mini or the Presa mod in the past will find the menu system very familiar.

See The Wismec Predator In Action With My Video Review

    What I Like

I love the size and weight of the Wismec Predator. The fact that the firmware can be updated to keep the mod current.

The left side hidden fire trigger button is delightful and easy to operate. With 50 Amp combined battery power it is possible to fire the Predator at 228w, I tried it once with Sony VTC 5’s my cotton caught light lol, at 100w or under the battery life is excellent.

The Elabo tank did surprise me. While I personally think it’s a pretty ugly, plain tank, the performance I received was very good.

The 4.6ml of e-liquid lasted me much longer than I would have thought, vaping at 80w plus I didn’t experience any loss of flavour.

    What I Didn’t Like

The only things I can say I don’t like about the Predator 228 is the paint job around the battery door. In my time testing this product the predator lived on my desk!

I would pick it up play with it and re-seat it down, it never left my office, however the paint on the base of the predator has taken 2 weeks to wear away.

The screen font is a little small for me and I find I have to use my reading glasses to view it.

They say that you are able to fully disassemble the Elabo tank. For me this wasn’t the case. To be frank I was worried that if I put the tank under too much pressure the pyrex tank would break.

    Final Review Verdict

The Wismec Predator 228 Kit is perfect for those of us of advanced ages who suffer from arthritis and find it difficult to press a conventional button at times.

The Elabo tank while ugly and plain is the perfect complement to the kit. While I wouldn’t recommend the Predator kit to new vapers due to the sheer power that might never be used, I would recommend it to an intermediate vaper.

If I lost or had the Predator 228 kit stolen I most certainly would replace it.

    • Battery life was excellent
    • 228watts of power at 50 Amps
    • Updated and redesigned 510 connection
    • Very Good build quality.
    • Whatever wire I used I had a great vaping experience
    • Decent vaping experience with the Elabo tank with no loss of flavour at higher watts

    • I have yet to find a way to take the Elabo tank fully apart
    • The paint on the bottom of the Predator wears quickly
    • The screen font is a wee bit on the small side

Review of Coil Art MAGE RTA

Recently, Coil Art has launched a mini RTA—Mage RTA, which goes the route of small size RTAs. I’m here to share my use experience with you guys.

Mage adopts paper box packaging, of which the top is transparent and imprinted with the logo of Coil Art. Through the transparent part we could see the atomizer inside. The two sides of the box are imprinted with the pattern of wand and the product name respectively. The front side is marked with the diameter and tank capacity.

Inside the pack there is also a standby glass tank, a hexagon wrench, several colorful sealing rings, a pack of standby screws, a card and a Coil Art silica ring.

Mage’s structure is the same as the typical bottom airflow liquid storage atomizers. It has three bar shape adjustable airflow ports. The material and diameter of the drip tip indicate that Mage is a big vapor atomizer. The large diameter is beneficial to discharge vapor, and the nonmetal material could prevent from conducting heat to the drip tip and burning the mouth. On the bottom of the evaporating tank there are four liquid flow holes. The logo of Coil Art is engraved on the center of the inner tank.

After completely dissembling the atomizer, we can see that the quantity of hardware is relatively small. The only five parts are: an integrated drip top, a tank cover, a glass tank, an evaporating inner tank and a base.

Judging from the hardware, Mage is a highly integrated atomizer. Each of the hardware has dual functions. For example, the drip tip has the function of sealing the liquid tank at the same time and could be connected to the 510 tip. The tank cover is integrated with the vapor tube and the cover of the inner tank, which has reduced the amount of hardware and is convenient for operating and maintaining. The design of the tank’s top cover indicates that Mage is a top filling RTA. The drip tip is connected to the top of the vapor tube through the thread, and it could seal the liquid tank via the sealing ring.

The base of the RTA also adopts the common structure of U shape four-hole electrode, being convenient for installing coils. The size of the holes is suitable for passing trick coils. The large size airflow ports are on the bottom—below the coils—and the position is higher than the bottom line, for the purpose of preventing liquid infiltration.

The positive power supply electrode is relatively thin, thus could be compatible with some special devices, for example, the boxes and mods whose 510 positive electrodes are excessively thick or thin, preventing from short circuit caused by the close distance of the positive and negative electrodes. Besides that, the atomizer should be installed by rotating the electrode deck (the 510 negative electrode in the picture was carelessly broken by me), thus regular thread and pin-lift structure can hardly realize and the stability could not be ensured.

Seen from the side, the center of the lower two coil holes are paralleled with the airflow ports. The excessively close distance of the coil and the port makes the two could easily touch each other and thus results in short circuit. Therefore, when installing the coils, try to raise the height of the coils to avoid touching with the ports, and ensure that the length of the coils is longer than the diameter of the ports.

As officially recommended, I’ve made the 2.5mm loose coils and raised them as high as possible, and the actual effect is not bad. Although the tails of the coils are close to the ports, they are not connected.

Mage could have raised the height of the ports by several millimeters to avoid this trouble, after all safety and practicability are more important than appearance and size.

The relatively large diameter of the coil holes is prepared to be matched with trick coils. I’ve tried to wind the 24Awg 2.5 coil for seven circles, however, because the length of the coil is shorter than that of the ports, their distance is too close. And if the fixing screw is too tight, the coil will be pinched off. So I will advise you guys to use trick coils or thicker ones like 22Awg coils to match with Mage.

The installment of Mage’s inner tank and the process mode of the cottons are similar to those of Five Pawns and KF4. Pass the cotton through the coils and leave moderate length, then put in the two sides in succession and screw the inner tank, after that press the cotton inside the bottom, being close to two sides of the ports and corresponding to the position of the liquid flow holes. The tails of the cotton shouldn’t be left too long, otherwise it will obstruct the process of liquid flow.

Mage’s inner tank is connected to the base through the outside thread. Pay attention that there are snap joints in the bottom, we should aim at the right position while installing, and then screw the inner tank to fix it on the deck.

The cover of the oil tank is integrated with the vapor tube and the inner tank’s cover. After the coil head is finished, put the glass tank on and point the inner tank’s cover toward the tread, press it down and screw to finish installment.

The overall size of the tanks’ covers have been reduced to the smallest level, so much so that after the sealing ring is installed, users should push down the cover heavily to put it into the tank.

Upon finishing the installment of the tanks and checking the position of the sealing ring, you could begin filling the liquid through the port on the top after closing the airflow ports on the bottom. The tank capacity of Mage is around 3.5ml, equaling to four droppers of 30ml liquid. Its cruise ability is well enough considering its small size. The liquid consumption is equivalent with RDAs with the same parameters.

    Actual Experience:

    Vapor Volume

Mage has the same base structure as RDAs, thus its vapor volume is also relatively large, being almost as well as RDAs under the same data. However, RTAs are equipped with liquid tank, thus the adding of evaporation tank and vapor tube has affected the vapor volume to a certain degree and make it a little bit smaller than RDAs under the same data.

Mage’s evaporation tank endows it with excellent flavor performance, making the flavor richer than regular RDAs.

    Ease of use

The biggest advantage of the four-hole dual electrodes structure is its convenience for use. But the excessively close distance between the bottom airflow ports and the coil holes could easily lead to short circuit, therefore it brings trouble in building and installing coils. That’s the reason why I don’t recommend it to beginners.

The craftsmanship of the atomizer in my hand is relatively exquisite. But some details need to be improved, for example, the uneven surface of the electrodes, the position of the coil holes and some rags in the corners.

In summary, Coilart Mage RTA tank can produce big vapor as well as deliver rich flavor.
